NPDD lab reflection:
The purpose of this lab was to find potential cures for human ailments. We were testing for antibiotic activity and see if any of our chosen plants prevent or kill growths. For the lab we collected plants, weighed them, made both an alcohol and water extract, filtered the extracts, poured agar plates, spread bacteria on the agar, soaked filter paper discs in the extract, and placed them on the bacteria. To know if our filters worked we placed one negative and one positive filter paper along with the three soaked in the extract. We did this because we needed to have something to base on weather our extracts worked or not. The positive filter paper had a small clearing around it where the bacteria had been, both our extracts had the same. If they had been negative there wouldn't have been a clearing around the disc. Some errors we had had to do with sanitation. The first time around we weren't careful enough with keeping everything extra clean. Because we weren't clean enough some mold and Bactria growth occurred. These kinds of experiments are important because finding new medicines can lead to finding cures for diseases.
